The Second Move

After an enriching surgical and academic journey across St. John’s Medical College Hospital and Manipal Hospitals over the past two decades, I recently joined Apollo Hospitals, Bengaluru, as Senior Consultant – Surgical Oncology.

This transition is particularly significant for me since, in over twenty years of surgical practice, this is only the second time I am changing institutions. That probably explains the mix of excitement, nostalgia, and rediscovery that has defined the first two weeks.

The most reassuring part of this move is that I have joined along with a like-minded and clinically strong team of surgical oncologists (Dr Harish Kumar, Dr Mahadev Abhishek and Dr Khyati Melanta) – each one of whom I have worked with in different phases of my career. Each team member brings their own unique strengths, perspectives and talents. This shared commitment to clinical excellence makes new beginnings much easier.

It has also been wonderful meeting many new people, while reconnecting with a few long-lost friends and colleagues along the way – making the transition feel both fresh and familiar at the same time.

Amidst all this, there have been the inevitable orientation sessions, ID cards, passwords, introductions, and of course, the mandatory photo sessions and posed smiles that accompany every new beginning.

Two weeks later, I still occasionally walk into the wrong corridor, depend on younger colleagues to navigate hospital software menus far more efficiently than I can, and continue figuring out the quickest routes to operation theatres, changing rooms, and that all-important spot for a quick bite between surgeries.

Perhaps that is what new beginnings are meant to feel like – slightly unfamiliar, mildly chaotic, and quietly exciting.
